The Texas Prison Music Outreach is a nonprofit organization that serves incarcerated music fans. Through The Heavy we foster positive community development, explore the mental health benefits of music, and provide trustworthy reviews of albums and songs available to inmates.
Our Writers and Artists
We attract a passionate and talented pool of writers and artists, both inside and out of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Many contributors bring their scholarly rigor and wit to their articles demonstrating their academic achievements while incarcerated.

OUR MISSION AND HISTORY
The Heavy presented by Texas Prison Music Outreach
We seek to eradicate the drudgery of prison life and grow the bonds of community through new musical experiences. The Heavy battles the forces of depression and hopelessness through engaging our audience with music. We attract an enthusiastic crowd of both writers and artists.
The Heavy emerged out of a collective passion amongst inmates in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Once we had access to tablets and a music store the excitement just couldn’t stay contained. Lists of bands and song recommendations passed back and forth like the fabled international underground tape trading network in the 80s. Tips and tricks on how to find quality music became the topic of day room conversations. Finally, the enthusiasm and demand for our knowledge surged, so we made the most underground Zine in existence, The Heavy.
The call went out and typewriters started clacking. We paired the outpouring of analysis and opinion by our talented writers with drawings by our awesome illustrators. With steadfast determination we overcame the extreme environmental challenges of assembling and distributing a Zine while we suffered from an utter lack of air conditioning. Our readership grew and we realized what we had created should reach all TDCJ inmates.

We are working to bring you a new digital format
The new digital publication of The Heavy will cover a broader spectrum of music genres, have more reviews, deeper and heavier articles dealing with the interplay of mental health and music. Artwork will be bigger and more detailed. The Heavy will no longer contain ads. We will add writer and artist profiles.
We are exploring adding content written by non-incarcerated experts
We hope to add musician interviews in addition to guest articles by mental health and music professionals.
